NAIROBI, KENYA / RankWire.AI / – According to a new comprehensive global evaluation, taking coordinated steps to combat climate change and reduce air pollution can yield approximately $15 in economic advantages for each dollar spent. The assessment was published on September 7 by the UN Environment Programme and Climate and Clean Air Coalition. It analyzes 25 different interventions targeting key sources of emissions and pollutants. This report is described as the first detailed worldwide economic assessment of integrated actions for climate and clean air.

Looking ahead to 2035, the evaluation projects annual economic gains equivalent to 2.8% of global GDP, increasing to 4.5% by 2050, and reaching 11.4% in 2100 if all measures are fully enacted. Without considering non-market welfare benefits, these measures still generate roughly $4 for every $1 invested. Additionally, the report highlights that delaying implementation by a year could result in missing out on more than $1.5 trillion in combined benefits annually.
The 25 strategies encompass sectors such as energy, fossil fuel systems, industry, transport, agriculture, residential energy, and waste management. They involve expanding renewable energy, improving energy efficiency, promoting cleaner cooking and heating methods, adopting electric vehicles, and tightening vehicle emission standards. Other initiatives focus on oil and gas leak detection, routine venting and flaring controls, fertilizer application, livestock management, rice cultivation, and crop residue burning. The plan also advocates for enhanced waste management practices and reductions in hydrofluorocarbons and other climate-affecting pollutants.
Economic advantages span multiple industries
In the context of economic evaluation, air pollution remains a critical factor because of its impact on health and productivity. The assessment links human-driven outdoor air pollution to roughly 6.4 million premature deaths worldwide in 2025. It also estimates that household air pollution caused an additional 2 million early deaths, including about 300,000 among children. Furthermore, outdoor pollution was responsible for 5.5 million new childhood asthma cases and 2 million new dementia cases during that year.
If fully implemented, these measures could prevent a total of 144 million premature deaths related to air pollution by 2050. Among these, 96 million deaths are linked to ambient air quality issues. The study further forecasts hundreds of millions fewer cases of chronic diseases. Compared to the baseline scenario, immediate action could reduce global carbon dioxide emissions by half by 2050, cut methane emissions by 60%, and decrease several major air pollutants by about 70%.
Climate and health benefits align
The scenario modeled suggests a potential reduction of about 0.34 degrees Celsius in global warming by 2050 and as much as 1.4 degrees by 2100. By the end of the century, concentrations of key air pollutants could decrease by up to 85% under the proposed measures. The cost of implementing these strategies is approximately 0.7% of global GDP over the next ten years, decreasing to around 0.5% by the end of the century. The report also notes that stronger policy support could accelerate full implementation by as much as ten years.
The UN Environment Programme and Climate and Clean Air Coalition unveiled these findings in observance of the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies. The assessment points out that institutional barriers serve as significant obstacles to broader adoption of existing measures. It estimates that overcoming these enabling conditions could lead to savings of up to $10 trillion by 2040. These findings demonstrate how climate policy, air quality, health expenses, and productivity are interconnected within a single economic framework, encompassing solutions already available across major sectors.
